It's all happening in Gippsland this week with the launch of Be Inspired Arts Festival. There are many exciting exhibitions, art shows, theatrical performances and workshops and demonstrations happening all over Gippsland throughout the month of May.
Yarragon is celebrating its Railway Centenary with a series of entertaining events this weekend, 'The Listening Land' will be performed at Wesley of Warragul and 'Watercolour Impressions' exhibition is opening at Lillico Glass studio.
'Off the Leash Theatre' will present a kaleidoscope of music, art and emotion with '(Dis) Connect'.
Hightea at Old Gippstown has proved so popular that organisers are hosting another this Sunday.
Craft enthusiasts will be catered for with The Biennial Quilt Show to be held at Hill End.
Bargain lovers are sure to find something of interest at Yarragon Market or the Saturday Morning Taste of Darnum. There are also two community garage sales with proceeds going to a worthy cause.

Official Opening of Yarragon Railway Station Centenary Celebrations
Minister for Public Transport and Roads, Terry Mulder, will officially open the weekend of
family activities.

There will be something for everyone including local musical performers, community
demonstrations and poetry readings, vintage cars and trucks, market and other activities to
showcase the creativity and sustainability of Yarragon.

“The Listening Land”
The West Gippsland Chorale presents “The Listening Land”. The program will feature the
works of Australian composers Iain Grandage, Stephen Leek and Matthew Orlovich.
Their music reverberates with sounds and moods, creatures and images characteristic of the
Australian landscape.
The first half of the program will also include readings of haiku and tanka by local poet,
Rodney Williams, providing images of the natural world in sympathy with the musical texts.
John Rutters’ “The Sprig of Thyme” will complement other music in this concert with a
selection of English, Scottish and Irish folk songs.

‘Wild Melancholy’
One of Australia’s most innovative recorder players, Ryan Williams, will make music with
Samantha Cohen who will play lute, theorbo and early baroque guitar. Add the voice and
gesture of Kari Lyon and this specially-formed trio will delve into the vastness of renaissance
and baroque improvisation and diminution in works by Sandrin, Ciprian de Rore and
Monteverdi. Kari won the Concert Artists’ Prize at this year’s Metropolitan International
Music Festival in New York.
A special song for Mother’s Day – Henry Purcell’s famous aria ‘Sweeter than Roses’ will be
a feature of this concert.

‘The Dancing Priest of Langres’
This is a revival of one of the Rippon Lea Renaissance Dancers’ most popular programs.
Based on the dance manual, “Orchésographie”, published by the French priest Thoinot
Arbeau in 1589, this fully- costumed presentation re-enacts the book’s fictitious meeting of
Arbeau and his student, Capriol. Their celebrated discourse outlines social requirements of
the time and expounds at length on the role of women. Dances from “Orchésographie” will
be accompanied by the Early Music Consort using rare historic instruments.

‘Wild4Art’
Award-winning Australian Wildlife artists Darren Gilbert, Janet Matthews, Vida Pearson and
Rodger Scott join forces once again in this exhibition exploring their shared passion for the
Australian environment and native wildlife. A diverse range of media will be represented
including sculpture, drawing, lino cuts and painting. Demonstrations by the wildlife artists
will be running throughout the exhibition.
